Yreka too tall of an order for Phoenix

BOYS PREP BASKETBALL

PHOENIX-- Coach Randy Shipley knew his Phoenix Pirates would have to maximize their opportunities to defeat much taller Yreka in the Pirates boys' basketball home opener Tuesday.

Phoenix wasn't able to accomplish that and dropped a 58-46 decision to the Miners.

We didn't shoot very well and we had too many turnovers, said Shipley. That's a bad combination when you're outsized.

With 6-foot-11 junior center Matt Short dominating the inside and 6-2 senior shooting guard Curry Caddell bombing from the perimeter, Yreka jumped out to a 16-4 first-quarter lead.

We thought we had to turn it into an up-tempo game to take their size out of it, said Shipley. Unfortunately we didn't get it at the pace we wanted early and fell behind.

Once you start playing catch up against a team that size you're forced to take more risks, added Shipley. It's real tough to make up the deficit.

Junior guard Sean Murphy scored nine of his team-high 19 points in the second quarter to spark a Phoenix comeback. The Pirates cut the margin to 33-23 at the break.

The key in the second quarter was Sean Murphy attacked the gaps in their zone and created some open shots for himself and our other people, said Shipley.

Caddell connected on four 3-pointers to tally a game-high 20 points, while Short added 16.
