South's array of weapons drop Eagles

SOC GIRLS BASKETBALL

EAGLE POINT-- Balance was the watchword for the South Medford High girls basketball team on Tuesday night.

Three of South's five starters scored in double figures and the other two added eight points each as the Panthers surged to a 65-44 victory over Eagle Point in the Southern Oregon Conference opener for both teams.

Kellie Thomas registered 18 points, Lynn Wooton had 17 and Heather Fossen added 13 for the Panthers. Karla Zenz and Whitney Grant chipped in eight points apiece.

Fossen and Zenz collected 10 rebounds each and Thomas had nine steals for the Panthers, who evened their overall record at 3-3.

They're a very balanced team, they don't rely on one or two players, Eagle Point coach Tom McCracken said. And they can hurt you inside and outside with their scoring.

South Medford led 16-10 after one period and 30-20 at halftime, but the host Eagles got within six on several occasions in the third period before star forward Dusty Damon drew two quick fouls and fouled out.

Damon, who had 14 points, picked up her fourth personal with 2:47 to play in the period and got her fifth just 30 seconds later on a reaching foul.

We essentially stopped playing when she fouled out, McCracken said. We've got to have some people step up when Dusty's not in the game, and that didn't happen tonight.

Eagle Point, which went into the game with a 4-1 record, also hurt its cause by committing 24 turnovers.

It looked like we played scared, McCracken said. We made some mistakes we hadn't been making in the preseason. We were a little jittery in the first half.

Senior guard Stephanie Lucas was also in serious foul trouble but managed to stay in the game and score 16 points to lead the Eagles.
