Backup wrestlers have big night as Crater clubs Pels

KLAMATH FALLS-- The Crater High wrestling team sent only a handful of its regulars to the mat Thursday night but the Comets still had way too much firepower for Klamath Union in a Southern Oregon Conference dual wrestling match.

The Comets got an early fall from Clancey Finchum and then closed the match with four straight pins as they muscled their way to a 53-15 SOC victory.

Crater coach Greg Haga was impressed with Finchum, the Comets' No. — man at 112 pounds.

He was real aggressive -- he got right after that Klamath kid, Haga said. He worked him over and then pinned him.

Haga was also happy with Nic Phair, the Comets No. 2 215-pounder who pinned Jimmy Johnson, and with Rudy Ramirez, who fought to a 16-9 victory over Brian Mahoney at 145 pounds.

Phair and Ramirez moved up from the JVs to wrestle the Pelicans.

It's not often that you see a 215-pounder use a high-crotch move, lift a guy up and then turn him over and pin him, but that's what Phair did tonight, Haga said. Our smaller guys could learn from that.

Ramirez registered three takedowns in the first period and two takedowns and a near fall in the second to keep the pressure on Mahoney.

Crater, ranked third in a national high school poll, will fly to Reno on Sunday to participate in the Reno Tournament of Champions. The tournament features 64-man brackets in each weight class with teams coming from as far away as the East Coast.
