North narrowly falls to No. 3 Churchill

PREP BASKETBALL

North Medford's boys basketball team stared down the No. 3-ranked team in the state Thursday night and didn't blink in one of the Black Tornado's finest efforts of the season.

Churchill (5-0) needed a fourth-quarter surge to edge North Medford 60-57 in a non-conference tilt.

The Black Tornado (1-4) managed a 51-46 lead with 3:56 to play, and the score was tied 53-all at the two-minute mark before the Lancers finally mustered a fourth-quarter advantage.

We had a couple of ill-timed turnovers, but we certainly played well enough to win, said North coach Gene Quilhaugh.

Senior guard Wes Towne paced the Tornado with 19 points and nearly sent the contest into overtime when his last-second 3-point attempt just rimmed out.

Junior point guard Mike Olson added 17 points and four rebounds, while senior post Jeff Schlichting chipped in 10 points and five boards.

The 6-foot-5 Schlichting also provided a defensive lift in limiting 6-8 post Drew Summers to only 12 points.

From what I've seen, Jeff's one of the most improved players in the valley, Quilhaugh said of Schlichting, who played mostly on North's junior varsity last season.

When Schlichting fouled out, I was very nervous about the outcome of the game because he had done such a fine job defending Drew Summers.

North used its help-side defense to sag in on Churchill's big men, allowing the Tornado to counter the Lancers' height advantage for a 27-24 rebounding edge.

Jeff Rohde led Churchill with 20 points, and Paul Worcester added 12.
