Late surge lifts Seattle to win over SOU women

MONMOUTH

-- Southern Oregon appeared to have things under control at halftime, but Seattle University got hot from 3-point range and defeated the Raider women 53-50 in the first game of the Ramada Inn/Western Oregon Holiday Classic Friday.

Southern Oregon (7-4) led 30-21 at the break and held the Chieftains scoreless from 3-point range on six attempts in the opening 20 minutes.

But the second half was a different story as Seattle connected on 6-of-13 3-pointers.

In the second half, we didn't defend the perimeter shot very well, Southern Oregon coach Shirley Huyett said. We didn't shoot the ball very well either. When you combine those two things, you wonder why it was close.

Despite shooting only 20 percent from the field in the second half, Southern Oregon was tied with Seattle at 48 with 1:46 to go. But Germaine Espinoza's third trey of the game gave the Chieftains the lead for good.

The Raiders came up with a steal trailing by one point with 38 seconds, but turned the ball over on the in bounds play after a time out and never mounted another serious threat.

Senior guard Lauren Mohan led the Raiders with a season-high 21 points.

Lauren was our highlight, said Huyett. She's shooting with a lot of confidence. When she's open she's looking for her shot.''

Southern Oregon goes against host Western Oregon at 8 p.m. today in the tournament's concluding round.
