Western Oregon sneaks past SOU

Raider roundup

MONMOUTH

-- The Southern Oregon University women's basketball team let one slip away Saturday.

The Raiders led midway through the second-half but couldn't hold off a furious Western Oregon spurt, dropping a 63-58 decision to the Wolves.

SOU led 47-41 with eight minutes remaining until Western went on a 16-4 run over the next six minutes to steal the win.

Liz Brennan drilled a 3-pointer for the Raiders to cut the lead to three with one-minute left but Heather Ottmar put the game away by knocking down two crucial buckets with the shot-clock running down to kill any rally hopes.

We just lost our momentum, said Southern Oregon coach Shirley Huyett. They made some big three's down the stretch and we couldn't hold on.

Both teams were ice cold from the field in the first half with the Raiders holding a slim 22-21 lead.

Things heated up after the break as SOU nailed 12 of 19 shots and were led by Melissa England and Amy Tangedahl's 12 points apiece.

Bresnan chipped in 11 points and Emily Wiley pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.

Clair Cox's 15 points and 10 boards led the Wolves, who improved to 5-7 on the season.

The Raiders dropped to 7-5.
