Williams powers Cavers

GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL

MERLIN-- Kaci Williams is not your prototype basketball guard, but the stout senior is enjoying a big season for the Grants Pass Cavers.

Williams scored 14 of her 20 points in the second half and added eight rebounds as the Cavers came from behind to pin a 42-30 loss on Phoenix in the opening round of the North Valley Booster's Holiday Tournament.

Kaci is so aggressive -- she plays 100 percent on every possession, Grants Pass coach Shaun Gross said of the 5-foot-5 Williams, who won the Southern Oregon Conference shot put title in track last spring. And she's a good shooter. She's been our spark offensively all season.

Phoenix led 13-11 after one quarter and 21-19 at halftime, but the Cavers went on an 11-4 run in the third period and never trailed again.

Williams kept the Pirates at bay by sinking all eight of her free-throw attempts.

The victory left Grants Pass with a 7-4 record.

We got after them defensively in the second half and basically wore them down, Gross said.
