Pirates wrestlers come to life, claim tourney crown

PHOENIX-- According to coach Harry Mondale, the Phoenix High wrestling team wasn't getting the desired results the coach wanted before the holidays.

That all changed on Wednesday, as seven Pirates claimed individual championships en route to winning the two-day, six-team Phoenix Invitational.

I didn't expect this at all, said Mondale after his team went 5-0 in dual matches over the two days. We haven't been wrestling very well, but over the Christmas break we have been practicing well. It just goes to show that good things happen when you put in the time.

After a slow start in the lower weight divisions, the Pirates showed its middle and upper weight dominance, as Ben Workman (125), Tyler McCarty (135), Phil Porter (145), Forest Jacobs (152), Tyler McPhee (160), Greg Brown (189) and Keanon Ferguson (215) won titles in seven of the final 10 weight classes.

Klamath Union, the lone Class 4A school in the tournament, finished second, 8 points behind the Pirates. Far West League representative South Umpqua was third.
