Grizzlies alone in first place

ASHLAND-- The No. 8 Ashland Grizzlies took over sole possession of first place in the Southern Oregon Conference girls basketball standings with a 71-33 rout of visiting Klamath Union Tuesday night.

The Grizzlies (9-4, 5-0 SOC) went on runs of 19-0 in the first half and 18-0 in the second half to dominate the contest wire-to-wire.

The kids were pretty excited, because this was just our second home game this season, Ashland coach Heather Roberts said.

Klamath Union (7-6, 2-3) entered the contest tied for second place. But with point guard Sam Gilbert home with the flu, the Pelicans turned the ball over 26 times.

We only pressed one quarter, Roberts said. With Sam Gilbert out, they didn't have anyone to bring the ball up against the press.

Jenny Pippa paced Ashland with 17 points, including three 3-pointers. Jackie Woods accounted for 16 points, nine rebounds and six steals. Chelsea Morgan 13 to go with six rebounds and four steals. Hanna Seltzer had six steals, four assists and four rebounds.

Ashland led 51-15 heading into the fourth quarter, connecting on 29-of-54 field goal attempts.

We set some goals for what we wanted to get out of the game, said Roberts. We met our goals.

With Crater falling to South Medford, 59-53, the Grizzlies could build a two-game lead with a win over the Comets Friday in Central Point.

We need to make sure that because somebody else beat them that we don't think we'll automatically beat them, Roberts said. We haven't thought that much about them. We have two days to get ready.
