Eagles manhandle KU, 49-9

EAGLE POINT -- Bob Bergen looked at the matchups and figured Thursday's Southern Oregon Conference wrestling dual between Eagle Point and Klamath Union would be close.

It wasn't.

Bergen's Eagles racked up four pins and added a forfeit victory to register a surprisingly easy 49-9 victory over the visiting Pelicans.

I really thought this would be a close match, Bergen said. Klamath has some tough kids. But we picked up some pins I didn't know we'd get and things just sort of snowballed from there.

Morgan Edenstrom got Eagle Point off to a good start by pinning Ryan Cornelison at 103 pounds.

Klamath Union's Todd Knutson and Adam Nielson followed with wins to tie the team score at 6-6, but then the Eagles reeled off six straight victories to ensure their ninth dual meet victory without a loss this season. Eagle Point is 4-0 in the SOC.

Mike Lopez, Derek Smith and Matt Bray recorded pins during the onslaught.

Lopez was having a real tough match with (Brad Keane) and then all of a sudden (Lopez) put him to his back and pancaked him, Bergen said.

Bergen was most pleased with sophomores Jamie Mannenbach and Blake Cam. Mannenbach twice took down KU's Danny King in the first period and went on to a 6-1 victory, while Cam pulled out a hard-fought 4-2 decision over Jason Bybee.

Danny King is a heck of an athlete and a very good wrestler, but Mannenbach got the early lead and wrestled a very sound, technical match, Bergen said. He didn't make hardly any mistakes.

Ditto for Cam, who trailed Bybee 2-0 early in their match but quickly retaliated with an escape and a takedown. Cam added one more escape in the second period.

I really am surprised to be unbeaten (in duals) at this point in the season, Bergen said. There are some tough teams in the SOC. But our kids are showing a willingness to get after people and have won a lot of close matches.

The Eagles will face a stern test Saturday when they run into defending state champion Crater at the Rogue Valley Wresting Championships at South Medford High.

They're tougher than nails but our kids are excited about wrestling them, Bergen said. We saw them at the South Coast Classic (in North Bend) a few weeks ago, but we only matched up against them a couple of times. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of them Saturday.
