Roseburg sophomore big man does in Tornado with 26 points —

SOC boys basketball roundup

ROSEBURG

-- Joe Newton may be a first-year varsity player for the Roseburg Indians, but the 6-foot-7 post didn't perform like a sophomore against North Medford in Southern Oregon Conference basketball Friday. —

— Newton scored a game-high 26 points as the Indians ended North Medford's two-game conference winning streak with a 62-43 home victory. —

— We never had an answer for him all night, North Medford coach Gene Quilhaugh said. He's a man-child. He's much more mobile than I thought he would be at this stage in the game. —

— The Black Tornado (5-8, 2-2 SOC) committed eight turnovers in the opening quarter and never got into a smooth offensive rhythm. —

We dug ourselves a hole with poor shooting and poor ball handling and couldn't come out of it, said Quilhaugh. We struggled offensively all night. —

— Newton scored nine points in the first period as the Indians took a 15-6 lead. Newton had 16 by halftime as Roseburg increased its advantage to 33-15. —

— We competed in the second half, said Quilhaugh. We stayed in our team structure. —

— Wes Towne was North's offensive spark with four 3-pointers and a team-high 14 points. —

— If Wes hadn't hit four 3's we'd have been down by 25 or 30, said Quilhaugh. He helped keep us feel at least decent about ourselves. —

— Tate Mellbye added seven points and 13 rebounds for North. —
