No. 2 Hornets sink Pirates, 68-44

PHOENIX -- Coach Randy Shipley assessed that his Phoenix Pirates performed about as good as we are capable of playing in Skyline Conference boys basketball action Friday.

Still, the Pirates remain winless in conference play.

Phoenix (2-12, 0-4 Skyline) battled No. 2-ranked Henley on an even basis early, but the talented Hornets still emerged with a 68-44 victory.

They've got great size and great athletes, said Shipley. We didn't match up well at any positions. They're good enough to beat you by 50 points.

Phoenix surprised Henley by taking a 14-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

We did a nice job defensively, we executed our offense and hit the open shots, said Shipley. It might have woke Henley up a little.

In the second period, Tim Frost and Michael Nunes combined for 15 of the Hornets 19 points, while the Pirates were held to a pair of free throws by Andy Bartels with 20 seconds to go before halftime.

They stepped their defense up a notch and we couldn't get our shots, Shipley said. You just don't get any interior points against them.

Gabe Willard led Phoenix with 22 points. Willard sank six 3-point goals to tie Ben Goodman's career school record of 131 treys.

They defended him (Willard) well, but when he got open looks he made the most of his chances, said Shipley.
