Tribe trips up tepid Tornado

ROSEBURG -- North Medford could not overcome cold shooting against the Southern Oregon Conference's surprise girls basketball team Friday.

Roseburg, not even picked to make the playoffs in a preseason coaches' poll, knocked off the SOC-favorite Black Tornado, 50-38.

The victory leaves Roseburg (8-5, 5-1 SOC) in sole possession of second place in the conference, one game behind SOC leader Ashland.

North (10-5, 4-2 SOC) only scored 10 points in the first half on 13-percent shooting and trailed the Indians 22-10.

We missed 11 layins in the first half, North Medford coach Mike Kay said. We couldn't get a shot to drop, and we became a little bit tentative.

The closest North could get was six points about midway through the final period.

Jordan Crossfield and Crystal Stephens combined for 23 points to lead the Indians. Stephens added 13 boards as Roseburg outrebounded North, 33-26.

Senior guard Ashlee Giles paced the Black Tornado with 15 points and eight steals.

North shot 29 percent (14-50) from the field.

When we haven't shot the ball well, we haven't been very successful, said Kay.
