Raiders return to form with rout

Staff reports

ASHLAND -- The Southern Oregon University women's basketball team took out the frustrations of a disappointing loss two nights earlier on Western Baptist Saturday at McNeal Pavilion.

Michelle Westerberg got the top-ranked Raiders off to a fast start and the Southern Oregon defense forced 35 turnovers in posting a 74-33 Cascade Conference victory.

Western Oregon handed the Raiders (17-2, 4-1 Cascade) their first conference loss and ended a 12-game SOU winning streak on Thursday.

After Western Baptist took a 2-0 lead, the Raiders answered with 13 straight points and the rout was on.

Westerberg, a senior wing who played at Ashland High, scored seven of her nine points in the first — minute, 37 seconds of the game.

She came out and hit a couple of shots and free throws and got us going, Southern Oregon coach Shirley Huyett said.

Then everyone else said `Let's go play.'

The Raiders held a comfortable 17-point halftime lead, then outscored the Warriors 22-2 in the first 12 minutes of the second half.

Western Baptist went almost 10 minutes during that span without scoring a point and only tallied 11 points in the entire half.

We were real determined to establish ourselves in the second half and play as well as in the first, Huyett said.

We wanted to play tough defense and make them work for everything they got.

Nada Janackovic and Denise Berry were largely responsible for holding Warriors leading scorer Cassee Steed, who averages 13 points and 10.6 rebounds, to two point and four rebounds.

Janackovic also contributed game-highs of 22 points and nine rebounds.

Nada played a lot more aggressively tonight, Huyett said. When she takes the ball to the basket, she's pretty tough.
