Roseburg boys charge back to beat Grizzlies

ROSEBURG -- The Ashland boys tennis team dug itself a hole that was too deep to climb out of in dropping a tough Southern Oregon Conference match Thursday against Roseburg.

The host Indians won the first three singles spots but needed a late doubles win to deny a valiant comeback effort by Ashland for a 5-4 triumph.

It was a good match for us, said Ashland coach Dick Streng. A good learning one for our young guys.

Ashland's Jacob Doty and Ian Kurtz won the No. 4 and 5 singles spots to spur the rally, while the teams of Nick Hershman-Jake Morris and Tyler Coke-Greg Boesche pulled the matchup even at 4-all.

With the outcome resting on the shoulders of the No. — doubles duos, Roseburg's Chris Atchison and Matt Munser narrowly earned a first-set win and then used an early advantage in the third set to upend Eric Sharp and Max Doty.

We have a lot of confidence and we have a lot of pretty good athletes who stay together, said Streng. We had a chance to beat them in that last set at No. — doubles, but we just started out slow after splitting sets and couldn't get it done.
