Ace helps vault House into golf tourney lead

Eric House had a flair for the spectacular Friday afternoon at Rogue Valley Country Club.

The Roseburg High senior recorded a hole-in-one on the difficult 166-yard, No. 13 hole on the way to a 1-under-par 71.

House, a left-hander, shot a 3-under-par 33 on the back nine.

He emerged as the first-day individual leader at the Southern Oregon Invitational golf tournament and guided the Indians into the team lead as well.

(House) shot exceptionally well for Roseburg, said South Medford coach Bill Singler. That's terrific golf to shoot 71 in these conditions.

With Tyler Mitchell adding a 77, Jeremy Thorburn a 79 and Jason Gaston an 81, Roseburg totaled 308 Friday to take a five-stroke lead over Ashland in the 10-team, two-day tournament.

Action resumes at — p.m. today at Grants Pass Golf Club.

We only get one or two holes-in-one on that hole a year, RVCC head professional Jim Wise said. It has an elevated a green that is sloped. It's not an easy hole to par, let alone ace.

Although's House's hole-in-one was the talk of the tourney on Day 1, Ashland High foreign exchange student Per Englund pulled off an impressive feat of his own. Englund holed out from the fairway for an eagle 2 on the 373-yard, par-4 18th hole on the way to a 77.

The two rounds this weekend make up one-third of the six rounds that will determine the conference champion.
