Eyman shines in Crater meet

Eyman shines in Crater meet

CENTRAL POINT-- In her first high school track meet, South Medford's Sarah Eyman stunned defending 1,500-meter state champion Emily Free of Roseburg and in the process came within 2/10ths of a second of the school record.

That was in the spring of 1997 and seemingly was only the baby steps of a burgeoning running career for the then-freshman.

But until Saturday, Eyman could never surpass, let alone match, that golden moment. Burdened by injuries and a less-than-tenacious work ethic, her times deteriorated rather than improved.

Once the track season ended last year, however, Eyman vowed her senior year would not go to waste. She trained right through the summer, running the roads and the hills near her Ruch home almost daily.

The extra work paid off in the fall when Eyman finished third at the Southern Oregon Conference district cross country meet and 14th at state.

And it paid more dividends Saturday at the 38th annual Crater Rotary Classic.

Running smoothly and confidently, Eyman surged past Klamath Union's Liz Lindgren to win the girls 1,500 in a time of 4 minutes, 56.8 seconds -- the sixth-fastest time in the state this year.

Eyman's time still didn't match the 4:52.2 she ripped off three years ago, but she's in the neighborhood and closing fast.

This is the best I've ever felt, Eyman said as teammates rushed up to hug her after her big win. I've been training hard, and I found a gear today that's never been there before.

That gear came with about 120 meters to go. Lindgren held a 3-meter lead, but Eyman cut the gap in half over the next 20 meters and then blew past the Klamath runner down the stretch.

Lindgren got some revenge in the 3,000 when she beat Eyman by two seconds in another fast race, but nothing -- not even a downpour at meet's end -- could dampen Eyman's spirits.

It just shows what total dedication means, South Medford distance coach Sandy Rowan said. Sarah's training much harder than last year. She used to go out during interval work and die out towards the end, but not this year.

She's able to run tired, and that's the mark of someone who's willing to pay the price.

Eyman's efforts helped the South Medford girls to third place in the 20-team meet. The Panthers' other win came from Heather Frigaard in the 100-meter hurdles (16.06).

Henley, fueled by four victories from sprinter Carie Knox, racked up 106 points. Klamath Union took second with 82 and South Medford was third with 70.

Knox ran a lifetime best of 25.7 to win the 200, added a victory in the 100 (12.73) and anchored both of the Hornets' relay teams to wins.

Bend, meanwhile, claimed top honors in the boys meet with 80 points even though the Lava Bears failed to produce an individual champion. Oregon City was second with 77 points and Marshfield third with 61.

While Eyman was in the midst of a running renaissance Saturday, teammate Perry Custance and Klamath Union standouts Ian Dobson and Evan Garich put on a dazzling show of their own.

Dobson registered the top times in the state in the 1,500 (3:56.85) and 3,000 (8:38.0), setting a lifetime best and meet record in the former, while Garich beat a loaded field to win the 800 in 1:57.3.

Custance was second to Dobson in the 1,500, running a lifetime best of 3:58.44, and second to Garich in the 800 in 1:57.59.

Perry (Custance) always brings out the best in me, said Dobson, who outkicked the South Medford runner over the final 100 meters to win the 1,500. I knew I'd have to run my best to beat him.

Garich and Custance registered the state's two best times in the 800 on April 6 in Klamath Falls, with Garich clocking 1:55.0 and Custance 1:56.7. Neither was able to match those times Saturday, but Klamath Union freshman Lauren Jesperson (1:58.05) and South

Medford sophomore Shaun Olsen (1:58.67) joined their teammates in dipping under the two-minute mark.

That was a heck of an 800, South Medford coach Bill Rowan said. Anytime you get four runners under two minutes, that's a quality race.

I know Perry's disappointed he didn't get a win today, but he ran a heck of a double.

Custance admitted he was growing frustrated losing to the Klamath Union runners.

I'm running my fastest times ever and still not winning, Custance said. In the past I've been able to just go out and power through the races and get the wins, but this year everything is more strategical.

I've got to think about what I'm doing every 100 meters. It's more taxing to run like that, but as long as I keep getting PRs I can't complain.

the state.

St. Mary's Trevor Coolidge re-set his own school record by a whopping six seconds (9:00.25) in finishing seventh.

The other notable marks Saturday came in the pole vault, where Myrtle Point's Caleb Krantz soared a meet record 15-7, and in the 400, where Marshfield standout J.R. Benavidez triumphed in 48.9.

In a quest for a lifetime best, Krantz moved the bar to 16-1 and narrowly missed on his final attempt.

Marshfield's Trevor Woods, the defending Class 4A state champion who has cleared 16 feet, settled for third place at 14-6 in his first pole competition of the spring. Woods, a quarterback on Marshfield's football team, broke his left leg in a playoff game last fall.

He was set to come back at the start of track season only to cut the same leg while chasing a basketball in his backyard.

Woods had only one week of practice prior to Saturday and used a five-step approach instead of his usual nine-step approach.

Host Crater had a big day in the boys shot put. Sophomore Chris Dearmond launched a lifetime best throw of 50-10 for the victory, while Scott Toney placed third (50-4) and Dave Vavoda fourth (48-6).

Rogue River's Sarah Zempel outdueled Siuslaw's Haley Hunt in a battle of the state's top two Class 3A girls shot putters. Zempel threw 38-3 compared to Hunt's 36-10 and came back with a lifetime best throw of 129-11 to win the discus.
