Mazama throttles Chieftains in twin bill

Mazama throttles Chieftains in twin bill

ROGUE RIVER-- Despite registering just one Skyline Conference victory this season, the Rogue River High baseball team had thrown a scare into each of its league opponents.

Hard-hitting Mazama made quick work of the Chieftains Friday, however, as the Vikings rolled to 11-0 and 14-2 victories. Each game went only five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Chris Stone fired a one-hit shutout in the opening game, and Lance Wagner tossed a four-hitter in the nightcap for Mazama.

I think they're the best team in the Skyline, Rogue River coach John Marvel said of the Vikings. They've got good pitching, and they hit the ball a ton.

Jake Nelson hit a two-run homer and his brother Jayson clubbed an RBI triple to pace Mazama's 10-hit attack in the opener.

Mazama came back with 12 hits in Game 2.

Rogue River, now 1-9 in conference play and 2-10 overall, committed 12 errors in the two games.

Travis Smeltz added two runs and one hit for Butte Falls, which takes on Bonanza today in a District 6 doubleheader.

ROGUE RIVER 4-7, MAZAMA 3-8--Jeri Mishler's RBI single tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning and then Shaye Eybanks scored on an error as Mazama salvaged a split with Rogue River in a Skyline Conference twin bill.

In the opening game, Rogue River pushed across two runs in the top of the sixth to overcome a 3-2 deficit and get the win. Alison Bailey stole home for the winning run.

Freshman Katie Glasscock got the win on the mound for Rogue River in the first game, and had a big game at the plate in Game 2 when she went 3-for-3, including a home run.

The split left Rogue River with a 6-4 record in Skyline play and Mazama with a 3-8 mark.
