Bulldog boxers send foes home

-- A festive night of boxing ended in controversy at the Oregon Junior Olympic Championships Saturday night.

After Medford's Bulldog Boxing Club had won three of four matchups against the Sacramento Police Athletic League, the latter squad walked out of the Jackson County Fairgrounds arena, apparently unhappy with the judging.

The Californians' premature departure meant that the final fight on the 10-bout card between Bulldog Mike Wilson and Sacramento's Eric Martinez in the super heavyweight division had to be called off.

Wilson was recently named as an alternate on the United States Olympic team.

I imagine they (Sacramento) thought they were getting robbed, Bulldog owner Joe Pedrojetti said. They definitely lost some close decisions to our guys, but I'm disappointed they left.

The same thing has happened to us in the past. You take your lumps and keep going.

In two of the more spirited bouts of the evening, the Bulldogs' Imanuel Luviano registered a split decision over Sacramento's Philip Manganaan at 112 pounds, and Troy Wohosky stopped Sacramento's Luis Tovar in the third round.

We were very proud of Luviano because this was only his ninth fight, Pedrojetti said. The other guy (Manganaan) came in with 25.

In other matchups between the two clubs, Bulldog Cody Kelly defeated Nick Moreno in a 9-10 age group, 65-pound fight, and Sacramento's Brad Hutchinson stopped Bulldog Brisen Healy in the third round of a 13-15, 147-pound match. It was Healy's first fight.

That fight (Hutchinson and Healy) was just a slugging match, Pedrojetti said.

In a match between 132-pound senior female boxers, Meghan Simpler earned a 3-2 split decision over Bulldog Kathy Theibes.
