Rogue Valley YMCA sets second junior camp

The Rogue Valley Family YMCA will be holding a second session for its Junior Sports Camp on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from July 10-21.

The camp runs from 9-10:45 a.m. at North Medford High. Games include flag football, team handball, mini Olympics and kickball.

Cost is $28 for non-YMCA members and $14 for members.

Registration is available at the Rogue Valley YMCA or by calling YMCA sports director Bill Johnson at 772-6295.

Johns claims crown at junior golf tournament

CORNELIUS — Stephanie Johns captured the championship at the Peter Jacobsen Junior Challenge played Monday and Tuesday at Forest Hills Golf Course.

Johns, 13, competed in the Intermediate Girls age 12-14 division.

The Ashland resident carded an 87 in Monday's first round, putting her six shots behind leader Courtney Sullivan of Portland. Johns made up the distance in the second round by shooting a 39 on the front nine and 41 on the back for an 80 — good for a three-shot victory over Sullivan.

The two-day effort qualified Johns for the PGA Junior Section Championship slated July 31-Aug. — at Hidden Lakes Country Club in Sandpoint, Idaho, and for the PNW Frank Rodia Memorial Championship to be played Aug. 21-22 at the Alderbrook Yacht and Golf Club.

Akins posts top score at StoneRidge golf event

Carmen Akins carded a 60 to win the two-hole throwout tourney's gross competition in Ladies Club action Thursday at StoneRidge Golf Course.

Joan Peek posted a 50 to edge De Rider (52) for the net title.

Luther cards hole-in-one at RVCC Ladies? tourney

Norma Luther notched a hole-in-one Thursday during the Ladies Invitational at Rogue Valley Country Club.

Luther, who has a 15 handicap, carded her third hole-in-one in eight years when she aced the 125-yard, No. 9 hole with a 5-iron.

Witnessing the event were Mickey Jarvis, Sara Anderson and Mary Ellen Plankenhorn.
