Mustangs fall, yet make title game

HILLSBORO — The Medford Mustangs American Legion baseball team's winning streak came to an end on Monday.

The Mustangs started the day with a 3-2 win over the Alpenrose Red Sox, their seventh straight victory, before Glencoe posted a 5-4 win at the John Nero wood bat tournament.

Medford, which is now 6-1 in the tournament, looked like it might take an unblemished mark into the tournament championship game today after a three-run seventh gave it a 4-2 lead.

Ken Halpin led off with a walk and moved to second on Phil Ouellette's single to right-center field. Evan McArthur reached safely on a sacrifice bunt attempt when the Glencoe catcher's throw went wildly past the first baseman, allowing Halpin to score and Ouellette to third.

Colby Gonzales drew an intentional pass to load the bases, and Travis Dunlap was hit by a pitch to force home another run. Chuck Shine capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

Mustangs pitcher Brent Kircher had a rough start in the bottom of the seventh when he hit the first two batters, the Nos. 7 and 8 hitters in Glencoe's lineup. Ian Curtis followed with a hit to load the bases.

The first Glencoe run of the inning came across on an error and, with the bases still loaded and another run in, Adam Strachen put down a perfect squeeze bunt to bring home the game-winner.

McArthur and Gonzales led Medford with two hits apiece.

In Game 1, the Mustangs trailed 2-1 heading into the sixth when they went ahead for good.

Matt Skundrick and McArthur produced RBI singles in the inning. McArthur was 4-for-6 on the day.

The Mustangs (22-10) play for the title today at 12:45 p.m.

— — NORTH JACKSON TAKES SECOND -At Portland, North Jackson fought its way through the loser's bracket of the Jesuit American Legion AA wood bat tournament with two wins and reached the championship game.

The Royals had little trouble with Clackamas in a 10-0, six-inning victory, then avenged an earlier loss in the tournament to Jesuit with a 5-2 win.

In their third game of the day, the Royals ran out of steam, dropping a 7-3 contest to Olympia, Wash., in the finale.

North Jackson trailed Olympia 4-3 but squandered numerous scoring opportunities.

With runners on second and third and only one out in the sixth, North Jackson failed to score, setting up a big Olympia seventh to ice the game.

Nick Newmann came in to pitch for the Royals after Olympia rapped three consecutive singles to start the inning, loading the bases.

Newmann induced two straight ground balls, but they were misplayed and three runs scored.

Ryan Garrett highlighted the Game — win with a two-run homer and Jesse Stevenson ended things in the sixth with an RBI single.

Newmann helped avenge North Jackson's 3-0 loss to Jesuit earlier in the tournament with a complete-game, 12-strikeout performance.

Newmann was also the lone representative for the Royals on the all-tournament team.

Garrett finished 8-for-20 with eight RBIs and three steals over the six games played to lead North Jackson, which dropped to 17-5 on the season.
