Raider wrestlers win, lose —

Raider roundup

DAVIS, Calif

. -- On perhaps its busiest day of the year, the Southern Oregon University wrestling team advanced five grapplers into the semifinals of the UC Davis Open Friday, just hours after competing in the second of two dual meets. —

— The Raiders defeated NAIA rival Embry-Riddle 29-9 and dropped a 30-9 decision to NCAA power Fresno State earlier Friday. —

— At the 13-team Davis tournament, Justin Thurman (133), Josh Morton (165), Ryan Schumann (174), Dan Sturgell (184) and Abe Haddon (184) earned berths into the semifinals, and seven other Raider wrestlers remain alive in consolation action. —

— Southern Oregon staked itself to a solid lead Friday morning against Embry-Riddle as Brad Gray (197) notched a forfeit victory, Devin Cole (285) earned a 7-6 decision and Nolan Harris (125) and Justin Thurman (133) followed with major decisions. —

— After a Jeremy Wynia pin at 141 and a Ryan Green decision at 149, the Raiders suffered a letdown as Embry-Riddle pulled out narrow decisions over the next three weight classes. —

— Abe Haddon halted the threat with a 10-3 decision for SOU at 184 to close out Embry-Riddle. —

— Against Fresno State, Cole earned a 4-2 decision at 285 and Dan Sturgell won by forfeit at 184 in accounting for all nine SOU points. —

— We got the job done against Embry-Riddle -- that was a match we needed to win, SOU coach Mike Ritchey said. —

— Ritchey singled out Green for his 9-5 upset victory over Embry-Riddle's Dusty Sanders, who is ranked No. — in the NAIA poll at 149 pounds. —

— Green, a sophomore from Lowell, is the Raiders' No. 2 man at 149. —

— He stepped in and did a great job, Ritchey said of Green. He got the early lead, turned the guy (Sanders) and then out-scrambled him. Ryan wrestled a smart match. —

— Ritchey admitted the Raiders were in a bit over their heads against Fresno State, the defending Western Athletic Conference champions who finished 10th at the NCAA tournament last year. —

— It was a chance for us to step up to the next level and see what we could do, Ritchey said. We wrestled them tough in some of the matches and were a little overwhelmed in some of the others. But I wasn't disappointed. I thought we competed with them. —
