Cascade qualifies for state playoffs

CHILOQUIN — Cascade Christian has qualified for the state playoffs for the first time since the school instituted football in 1991.

The Challengers achieved that hallmark with a 20-2 thrashing of Chiloquin Friday, assuring Cascade at least a second-place finish in the Southern Cascade League with one week remaining.

Cascade Christian is host to Lost River next Friday in what shapes up as a battle of unbeatens for the league championship. The game is at 7 p.m. at the V.A. Domiciliary.

The Challengers are 4-0 in league and 5-3 overall. Lost River, which plays at Gilchrist today, is 3-0 and 5-2.

The winner of next week's game goes to state as the league's No. — team, the loser as No. 2.

Lost River is the defending league champion. Last year, it defeat the Challengers 21-7.

Against Chiloquin, Cascade Christian rode the rushing of Brian Prins and Jordan Ferrell, each of whom gained more than 100 yards.

Prins had 110 yards on 24 carries and scored two touchdowns on runs of 23 yards in the first quarter and — yard in the third.

Stan Kelly added a 1-yard touchdown in the second for the Challengers, who allowed Chiloquin's only points when they snapped the ball out of the end zone on a punt in the third quarter.

Ferrell ran for 102 yards on 16 carries as Cascade Christian amassed 252 yards on 54 carries.

Equally impressive was the Challengers? run defense, which limited the Panthers to minus-11 yards.

Chiloquin passed for 116 yards but was intercepted three times.

POWERS 46, PROSPECT 22 — —

At Prospect, Powers quarterback Tommy Blanton passed for four touchdowns and ran for another.

Top-ranked Powers (8-0, 6-0) built a 36-0, first-half lead.

Quarterback Zach Gordon got Prospect on the board before halftime with a 51-yard touchdown run. Gordon connected with Nolan Lenderman for a 5-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter.

Prospect (3-5, 3-3 Sky A), which had only nine players in uniform, hosts arch-rival Butte Falls in its season finale next Friday.

BUTTE FALLS 56, NORTH LAKE 26 -At Butte Falls, Tommy Lunsford and Nick Rodgers had career days for Butte Falls (4-4, 3-3 Sky A).

Lunsford scored five touchdowns and accounted for 271 yards in offense. The junior running back rushed 11 times for 125 yards and had eight receptions for 146 yards.

Rodgers, a junior quarterback, passed for a career-best four touchdowns and 229 yards. Rodgers also ran for a pair of touchdowns.

Butte Falls led 20-14 at halftime, but North Lake tied the game 26-all midway through the third quarter.

The Loggers countered with 30 unanswered points to put the game away.

Senior running back Mark Lunsford, Tommy's brother, also had a big game. He led the Loggers with 164 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns, one coming on a third-quarter, 30-yard interception return for a 38-26 lead.

The Loggers rushed for 335 yards and accumulated a season-high 564 yards in offense.
