SOU women win

ASHLAND — It was the tale of two half's for the Southern Oregon University women's basketball team on Friday.

The Raiders took a 10-point halftime lead and turned it into a 87-49 rout of Dominican to break into the win column for the first time this season in the Southern Oregon Classic at McNeal Pavilion.

We came out really slow at the beginning, said SOU coach Shirley Huyett, whose team improved to 1-6. We got behind then picked up our defensive intensity and held them scoreless for about seven minutes.

SOU trailed 8-2 early but rallied to take a 11-10 lead at the halfway point of the first half.

They (Dominican) did a lot of good things defensively, said Huyett. We finally broke their pressure, took care of the ball and made a decent percent of our free throws.

The Raiders, who have been plagued by poor shooting on the season, shot a respectable 44-percent from the field while connecting on 27-of-37 attempts from the charity stripe.

Emily Wiley chalked up a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Alison Richards led SOU with 14 points and six assists.

The Raiders take on Holy Names, who fell to Central Washington 71-50 in Game — of the tournament, today at 3:30 p.m.
