SOU shocks No. 2 OIT

ASHLAND — Southern Oregon University knocked off second-ranked archrival Oregon Tech 66-62 in the championship of the Rodeway Inn Invitational.

Despite squandering most of an 18-point halftime edge, the Southern Oregon men (2-3) defeated the Owls for the fifth straight time at home, registered the school's biggest upset based on national rankings since 1993 and captured their second Rodeway title over the past three seasons.

Junior center Matt Zosel earned tourney MVP honors by torching defending Cascade Conference tournament champion OIT (3-1) for career highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds.

SOU junior guard Hamilton Barnes made the all-tournament team with 11 points and 24 for the weekend.

After shooting 28 percent in the first half (9 of 32), the Owls started the second stanza with a 13-2 run and eventually cut the deficit to one, 54-53, on an Alex Carlson lay-in with seven minutes left.

But Raider guard James Wightman, from South Medford High, answered seconds later with a 3-pointer, and OIT got no closer than three the rest of the game.

OIT, which entered the game averaging 95 points in three previous outings, was paced by junior forward LaMont Swinson's 14 points and six rebounds.

Cal Maritime defeated San Jose Christian 66-63 in the Rodeway consolation game.
