Houston's big game powers Cougars' triumph

CAVE JUNCTION — Skyline Conference leading scorer Justin Neville of Illinois Valley was slowed with the flu Tuesday night but junior post Daniel Houston came through with his most productive game of the season to help the Cougars rally to beat Rogue River 57-53.

Houston provided Illinois Valley (11-3, 3-1 Skyline) a game-high 17 points and hauled down 16 rebounds.

He (Houston) was the spark we needed, Illinois Valley coach Jeff Brimhall said. He had some good drives to the basket and got a lot of offensive rebounds. He played real hard.

Rogue River led 50-47 with about three minutes remaining in the game, when Neville hit his only 3-pointer to spark a 10-3 run to end the contest.

That gave us the momentum we needed, said Brimhall. He stepped up in the clutch when we needed it. It was the first shot he hit since the second quarter. But it sure was a big one.

Neville, who entered the game averaging 24 points per game, was held to a season-low 11.

Brandon Henry also came up big for the Cougars with 12 points and 17 rebounds.

Houston and Henry kept us in the ball game with some big rebounds, said Brimhall.

Illinois Valley was opportunistic from the foul line in the fourth quarter, converting on 9-of-12. Jessie Russell led the way with a 5-of-6 effort in the final period.

For Rogue River, Jason Luchterhand had 16 points and Derrick Schoner 14.
