Rogue River breezes past Pirates

ROGUE RIVER — It was a defensive struggle in Rogue River as the Chieftains outlasted Phoenix 42-37 in a Skyline Conference game on Friday.

The Pirates (8-7, 2-3 Skyline) shot 24 percent (13 of 55) from the field and 50 percent (9-18) from the free-throw line. The Chieftains shot poorly from the field as well only making 14 field goals, but they capitalized at the free-throw line making 10 of 16.

The Chieftains (4-11, 1-4 Skyline) maintained a 13-point lead in the third quarter, but the Pirates chipped away and got to within one point in the fourth.

We didn't execute well at end of the third and the beginning of the fourth, Rogue River coach Scott Anderson said. But we hit our free throws down the stretch.

The Chieftains made 8 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Derrick Schoner led the Chieftains in scoring with 16 points including two 3-pointers.

Landon Rhodes and Mike Duffell led the Pirates with nine points each. Duffell also pulled down 10 rebounds.

ILLINOIS VALLEY 76, LAKEVIEW 64 -At Lakeview, senior guard Justin Neville helped Illinois Valley erase a five-point deficit entering the final quarter by scoring 13 of his game-high 33 points.

The Cougars (12-3, 4-1 Skyline) capitalized on a big advantage from the foul line, connecting on 20 of 24 free throws compared to 4 of 13 for Lakeview.

Illinois Valley was clutch from the line in the final period, converting 13 of 16. Daniel Houston was 4-for-4 and Neville 5-for-6 in the fourth quarter.

IV's Brandon Henry dominated the inside with 15 rebounds and chipped in 13 points.

Carl Fairburn paced the Honkers with 21 points, including five 3-pointers.

HENLEY 76, NORTH VALLEY 37 -At Klamath Falls, Michael Nunes recorded a triple-double for Henley (10-4, 4-1 Skyline).

The 6-foot-4 senior point guard scored 10 points to go with 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Nunes also had two blocks and only one turnover.

Travis Boshuizen tallied a season-high 22 points for the Hornets.

Henley's press rattled the Knights from the opening tip as the Hornets outscored North Valley 25-6 in the first period.

Henley had 25 steals and outrebounded the Knights, 43-21.

Derek Wright paced North Valley with nine points.

— HIDDEN VALLEY 56, MAZAMA 52 -At Murphy, the Mustangs fell behind 18-2 in the first quarter but had a 24-point second quarter to take the lead and bag the Skyline Conference win.

The Mustangs (7-7, 3-2 Skyline) had a 16-2 run in the second quarter.

Senior Kevin Ries scored 20 points and had four steals for the Mustangs.
