Moncada, Leon advance in Golden Gloves tourney

Bulldog Boxing Club members Fransua Moncada and Lionel Leon have each advanced to the quarterfinals of the National Golden Gloves boxing tournament in Reno.

Moncada stopped Reynold Madaro of Kansas in the second round of Tuesday's 112-pound bout.

Leon, a substitute in the tourney for another boxer who couldn't make weight, earned a decision over James Picarra of Hawaii.

Superheavyweight Mike Wilson failed in his bid to put three Bulldogs in the quarterfinals, losing a decision to Mike Alexander of Ohio.

Alexander was a finalist in last year's Golden Gloves tourney.

Former IV star Pennell wins Pac-10 mat honor

CORVALLIS — Oregon State freshman and Illinois Valley High School graduate Jed Pennell has been named the Pacific-10 wrestling newcomer of the year.

Pennell, who competed at 165 pounds for the Beavers last season, placed fifth at the Pac-10 Championships and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

He finished the season with a 17-12 record. Four of his losses were in overtime.

Arizona State 141-pounder Eric Larkin was named Pac-10 wrestler of the year and former ASU coach Lee Roy Smith was selected Pac-10 wrestling coach of the year.

Lava Hot Shots take lead in bowling championship

GRANTS PASS — The Lava Hot Shots of Medford rolled into first place Sunday during the first of 11 weekends in Division I of the Oregon State Women's Bowling Association Championship at Caveman Lanes.

Sheilah Anderson (198-190-158?546), Debbie Gibson (155-145-160?460), Pattie Dungey (183-195-159?537), Sharon Everist (203-177-172?552) and Lela Larkin (234-223-203?660) scored a 3,387 total pin fall, including a 632 handicap.
