Cascade falls in playoffs

SALEM - Cascade Christian baseball pitcher Bryan Edwards finally lost a game after posting 13 straight wins during the season.

Unfortunately for the Challengers, his first loss came in a one-and-done situation.

Salem Academy benefited from three hits and three Challenger errors to post three runs in the bottom of the seventh, stealing a 4-3 Class 2A/1A, state-tournament second-round win on Monday.

Salem Academy moves on to face Nyssa in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Edwards had tossed a two-hitter up until the decisive seventh with his squad holding a 3-1 lead.

"Bryan threw a terrific game," said Cascade Christian coach John Bruce. "He just hit the wall and ran out of gas in the last inning."

Salem Academy started the inning with three seeing-eye singles to close the gap to 3-2.

An errant pick-off throw to first cost Cascade another run, Forcing Bruce to bring in Chad Harvey to try and stop the bleeding.

Harvey struck out the first batter but a routine double-play ball that followed was tossed into left field, allowing the game-winning run to come across.

"When it rains, it pours," said Bruce referring to the disastrous seventh. "We had our 3-4-5 hitters coming up and if we get out of that inning, it's a whole new ballgame. I guess it just wasn't meant to be."

The Challengers ended the season with a 22-4 record.
