The Dalles shuts down Mustangs

THE DALLES - Jordan Denney is the No. 2 pitcher for second-ranked The Dalles, but Hidden Valley might not agree.

The senior pitcher tossed a no-hitter as The Dalles ended the Mustangs post-season run in the Class 3A state baseball semifinals with a 12-0 victory in five innings Wednesday.

The Indians (24-4) will make their sixth trip to the state finals in coach Steve Sugg's nine-year coaching reign.

The Dalles will face undefeated and No. 1-ranked Grant Union, a 1-0 winner over Glide in the other semifinal contest, in the championship game Saturday at Volcanoes Stadium in Keizer.

The Dalles will be going for its fifth state championship under Sugg.

Denney struck out six and walked one to improve to 6-1 on the season.

"He was spotting his pitches real well," said Sugg, "and his breaking ball was working good. That kept Hidden Valley off balance."

Senior Ken Brock provided a 3-for-3, four RBI performance to lead the Indians' 12-hit attack. Brock smacked a three-run homer in the third inning that gave the Indians a 10-0 advantage.

Second baseman Marcus Denney, Jordan Denney's twin brother, added two hits for the Indians.

Hidden Valley, which made it to the state playoffs for the first time in its 22-year history, completed the season at 21-5.
