Wauge rides to big victory

WHITE CITY - Mark Wauge sent a message that the dirt modified division won't be settled without him having a say at the Southern Oregon Speedway this season.

The defending champion held off 1997 points champion Dennis Silva for a big victory in the modified feature. The win was the first of the season for Wauge, who set the pace for all modified drivers in 2000 when wings were allowed to be attached to the cars. While the wings have been taken off this season, Wauge has been having a solid campaign, opening the night sixth in the points before taking his first checkered flag of the season.

It was also a first of the season for Cal Lanfear, who broke Jim Walker Jr.'s recent stranglehold on the pro stock division. Lanfear posted a comfortable victory, turning back Walker Jr., who had four feature wins on the season prior to Saturday's race. Either Walker Jr. or Frank Word III had won each of the feature events in the pro stocks before Lanfear's triumph.

While Lanfear slowed Walker Jr., there was absolutely no stopping Patrick Lanigan as he claimed his fifth straight win in the mini stock division. Lanigan's won the track's super truck title last season before making the move to the mini stocks.

The feature win in the dwarf cars went to John Dentone.

Racing continues Saturday night at the Speedway, where gates open at 4 p.m. and the first green flag comes down at 6.
