Trio to play in All-Star series in Salem

A pair of Cascade Christian seniors and one of their long-time foes will team up in the June 22-23 Oregon Senior Girls' All-Star Series in Salem.

Kelly Clarke and Janelle Conley will represent the Challengers along with Lani Brophy of St. Mary's.

The 5-foot-7 Brophy was a three-sport star for the Crusaders, but will not play anything when she enrolls at the University of Washington.

"In high school, I made the decision to play three sports and I didn't get good enough in any of them to play Division I," Brophy says. "But that's where I wanted to be academically."

Brophy will also play in the Class 2A/1A all-star softball series in Salem next weekend. She was a second-team all-state volleyball selection as well.

Clarke, a 5-10 forward, plans to enroll at Northwest College in Kirkland, Wash., next fall, where she will play basketball and volleyball. Conley will attend Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay.

Clarke was a first-team Southern Cascade League all-star and a third-team all-state pick. Conley, who suffered a neck injury in an auto accident in December, was honorable mention, while Brophy earned first-team honors.

Clark averaged 16.3 points, 10 rebounds and three assists.

"Kelly was always the one we looked out for when we played them," Brophy says. "It will be nice not to have to defend her."

Clarke considered Western Baptist, George Fox and a couple of schools in California before picking Northwest.

"I'm kind of nervous and excited at the same time to play two sports," Clarke says. "They're kind of a short team in basketball and were looking for posts, but I'll probably play both post and wing."

Conley, a 5-9 wing/point guard, hopes to use the series as jump start a transition from the wing to point guard.

"It's going to be a big step for me," she says.

Tripleheaders are scheduled beginning at 5 p.m. June 22 at Western Baptist College and at — p.m. June 23 at Chemeketa Community College. Class 3A teams play first followed by 1A and 2A.

In the Class 3A game, Chelsi Clark of Phoenix and Snow Staples of Illinois Valley will play for the East team.

In the Class 1A game, five players from the Skyline A League are on the West squad: Addie Stockebrand of Prospect, and Lindsey Stockton of Butte Falls, Anna Castille of North Lake, Kasey Jones of Paisley and Kristy Robey of North Lake.
