Bulldog boxers take home bronze medals
MARQUETTE, Mich. - Troy Wohosky and Lorenzo Rios of the Medford Bulldog Boxing Club each took home the bronze medal at the 15-16-year-old Junior Olympic National Championships Thursday night.
Wohosky was scheduled to fight Benjamin Orozzo of Fortworth, Texas in 112 pound division in the semifinals but had to forfeit due to a swollen eye. Wohosky was subsequently awarded the bronze.
Rios took home the bronze after dropping a three round decision in the 125 pound division semifinals to Luis Lodano from New Hall, Calif. Lodano is the 125 pound defending champion.
Wohosky took out Mel Crossti of Cincinnati in the first round, then dominated Carlos Molina of Southern California for a second-round victory on Wednesday.
Wohosky weighed in six pounds over the fighting weight when he arrived on Sunday and had to lose the extra pounds.
In his second-round bout, Wohosky was thumbed in the eye by Molina.
Rios came off his first-round bye to defeat Cory Summerville of Covington, Tenn., in the quarterfinals.
Also competing for the Bulldogs but dropping a second-round bout was Alex Trujillo.
Joel Castillo of the Bronx, N.Y., took out Trujillo in quarterfinal action.
