Crater boys tip Del Norte in soccer

CENTRAL POINT - After a lukewarm beginning, the Crater boys soccer team turned up the heat and wore out Del Norte for a 3-0 non-conference victory on Monday.

After giving up nine shots on goal in the first half, the Comets (3-4, 0-2 SOC) turned the tide.

Del Norte managed just three shots in the second half.

Scott Malone got the Comets started seven minutes into the second half off an assist from senior Brandon Jones.

Senior Jason Bell sealed the win after a great lead pass from Todd Sesock gave Bell a one-on-one situation with the goalie. Bell forced the keeper out and booted a 6-yard goal.

Senior John Bowers scored the opening goal on a blast from 25 yards out.

Girls Soccer

CRATER 12, DEL NORTE 1- At Del Norte, sophomore Sarah Lafontaine scored three goals and added three assists to lead the Comets to the non-conference rout.

Senior Megan Confer and freshman Courtney Ratty notched two goals apiece.

The Comets (5-4, 0-2 SOC) held a 7-0 halftime lead.

Cross Country

ROGUE RIVER THIRD- At Florence, the Rogue River girls cross country team finished in third place with a score of 102 points at the Woahink Lake Invitational on Saturday at Siuslaw High School.

Andrew Barella led the Rogue River boys to a seventh by capturing fifth place with a time of 17:26.39

The races were 5,000 meters.

Lauren Fety was the top finisher for the Chieftain girls, taking third in 20:01.48.

Also for Rogue River, Allegra Fety finished seventh in 20:23.13, Erin Gilkison 17th in 21:32.58, Ashley Marriot 35th in 23:04.34 and Amanda Selanders 50th in 23:58.51.

Other boy finishers were Roman Newell, 36th, in 18:55.81; Nathan Fieguth, 44th, in 19:11.90; Greg Jentzsch, 51st, in 19:27.44; and Tom McGann, 56th, in 19:46.08.
