Bulldogs highlight area event
Ready to watch a rumble?
The Northwest Boxing Classic, presented by Medford-based Bulldog Boxing Club, bobs into action Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Jackson County Expo Park's Olsrud Arena.
Featured in the 10- to 15-match event are Mike Wilson and Enrique Gallego, 18-year-old Southern Oregon natives who are recent national champions.
A 2000 Olympic Team alternate and super heavyweight, Wilson is a four-time junior national champion who "people like to watch," according to Bulldog Boxing founder Joe Pedrojetti.
Gallego, a welterweight, claimed the 2001 Ringside National Championship this summer and "probably has more bouts than anybody in the (Bulldog) program," Pedrojetti said.
Wilson is slated to face Brian Torewski of Tacoma, Wash., and Gallego squares off with William Hughes, also of Tacoma. Those two bouts will close the event.
"The crowd goes wild (for their fights)," said Jim Pedrojetti, Joe's son and co-owner of Bulldog Boxing. "They hit really hard."
Javier Torres is a third Bulldog-trained national champion. A 13-year-old who fights at 125 pounds, Torres faces yet another Tacoma fighter, Bruno Torres. There is no relation.
General-admission tickets are $10.
