SOU falls to Western Baptist in soccer

SALEM - Unable to maintain a 2-1 halftime edge, the Southern Oregon women's soccer team lost at Western Baptist, 2-1, on Saturday.

The Raiders (7-8-1 overall, 7-3-1 Cascade Conference) were done in by three goals from Warriors sophomore KeriAnn Lawson.

Jen Troja blasted a penalty kick off the crossbar in the 65th minute, but Lawson was there to clean up and score the game-winner for Western Baptist (10-7, 10-1).

Lawson's other second-half goal came in the 63rd minute off an assist from Summer Merritt.

Emily Castor completed a cross from Desirae Tarr 13 minutes, 31 seconds into the match to hand SOU a 1-0 edge.

Lawson answered, unassisted, at 41:13 to tie it.

Just 40 seconds later, Anne Endrikat followed an Alison Richards shot that caromed off a Warriors defender to hand the Raiders a 2-1 advantage.

Western Baptist enjoyed a 31-13 shots edge, and SOU goalkeeper Emily Schifferling made 10 saves to keep the Raiders in it until the end.

Cross Country

SOU PLACES SIXTH AT MEET- At Issaquah, Wash., on the strength of a sixth-place showing at its regional/conference preview, the Southern Oregon women's cross country team expects to crack the top 25 in the next national NAIA poll.

The Raiders finished with 139 points behind Alanna Steinert's team-best 15th-place inidividual performance. Steinert blazed through the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 39 seconds at Northwest College.

Liana Bernard finished in 18:53 to place second among her SOU teammates and 23rd overall.

The host, Northwest College, lived up to its No. 2-ranking in NAIA by claiming first by a 59-point margin.

Unattached Sarah Sorrey ran a 17:51 to secure the individual crown.

Results for the Raider men were not available.
