Phoenix, Rogue River take home titles

MURPHY - The Phoenix boys and Rogue River girls left little to chance Saturday afternoon as the defending champions once again ran away Skyline Conference district cross country titles.

The Pirates posted the top three boys times and five of the top 10 in coasting to their second straight district title.

Phoenix won with 22 points, followed by Lakeview at 62 and Rogue River at 76. Mazama was fourth at 80, followed by Henley (118) and North Valley (166).

Phoenix junior Nathan May led the pack with a winning time of 16 minutes, 40 seconds. On his shoulder was junior Lalo Flores at 16:41 and sophomore Kyle Gillette (16:51).

"The top three guys are always pretty tough," said Phoenix coach Bruce Timmerman. "They kind of pushed each other a little bit today, maybe a little more than they needed to. They could have probably coasted the last half-mile or so to stay fresh for next week but that's OK. They'll have time to get their legs back."

The top two teams and seven fastest individuals advance to next Saturday's Class 3A state meet at Lane Community College in Eugene.

Rounding out the top five scorers for Phoenix were Adam Chizek, who finished seventh at 18:15, and Matt Supan (ninth, 18:46). Brenton Ferguson of Phoenix took 12th at 18:55.

"Our 4-5-6 guys ran decent races today and they'll need to do that at state to give us a chance at a trophy," said Timmerman.

"At a bigger meet, the time gap between our third and fourth and fourth and fifth runners is going to mean quite a few points so we need to try to cut that time gap a little."

Rogue River's team was just as dominant in the girls competition, posting four of the top seven times to ease past Lakeview for the Chieftains' seventh straight team title.

"We just tried to go and take care of business and get ready for next week," said Rogue River coach Nicki Wright.

"The course was a little bit nerve-racking because we needed to be careful for turned ankles so we didn't run our hardest. Our times aren't that great because we just ran to win."

Rogue River's Lauren Fety crossed the tape first at 20:10, followed by Elise Sabin of Lakeview at 20:17 and fellow Chieftain Allegra Fety at 20:34.

Sabin shadowed Lauren Fety for much of the race before the Rogue River senior sped away in the last leg.

"Lauren had it tough today but she knew what she needed to do," said Wright. "Lauren's tough and stubborn and she really wanted the title."

Helping the Rogue River cause were a sixth-place finish by Erin Gilkison (21:55) and seventh-place effort by Kelly Birdseye (21:59).

Henley finished third as a team, followed by Mazama and Phoenix.

Leading the charge for the Pirates was sophomore Amanda Phillips, who just missed a second straight trip to the state meet by placing ninth at 22:36. Phillips had been slowed by a myriad of injuries this season, as had many of her Pirate teammates.
