Miles reaches milestone as OIT downs Southern Oregon

KLAMATH FALLS - Danny Miles moved past Ralph Miller on the list of victories by Pacific Northwest college basketball coaches Saturday when Oregon Tech defeated Southern Oregon, 66-60 in men's action.

Miles, a Medford native, has 675 career wins, all at Oregon Tech over 31 seasons.

Miller, who passed away last May, had 674 victories when he retired from Oregon State. He also coached at Iowa and Wichita State.

Oregon Tech (20-7, 10-4 Cascade Conference) got 19 points from LaMont Swinson and 18 from Alassane Bakayoko in downing the Raiders.

SOU (10-14, 6-7 Cascade) was led Jeff Tacheny's 16 points and seven rebounds. Moses Olson had 11 points and eight boards.

Women's Basketball

SOUTHERN OREGON 95, NORTHWEST COLLEGE 80- At Ashland, Southern Oregon posted a season-high for scoring and captured its fifth straight victory with a 95-80 Cascade Conference triumph over Northwest College at McNeal Pavilion Saturday night.

Led by a 17-point, eight-assist effort by junior point guard Sara Marks, five Raider players scored at least 11 points to lift SOU to 13-9 overall and 9-3 in league play.

The Eagles fell to 5-21 and 3-9 with their fourth straight loss.

The teams battled to three ties and four lead changes until a Marks jumper with 6 minutes, 34 seconds remaining in the opening stanza staked SOU to a 29-27 lead and sparked a 12-0 run.

SOU, which took a 44-34 halftime edge, never trailed again although NC moved within six, 61-55, with 12 minutes to go on a 3-pointer by freshman guard Emily Helmly.

Senior all-star forward Melissa Core posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while junior forward Kara Magee-Arick came off the bench for 14 points.

"If the best defense is a good offense is true, that's what we did tonight," Raider coach Kevin Wilson said in a released statement. "We allowed a lot of points, but we scored a lot as well."

Northwest received 17 points from junior guard Kim Haley. Helmly finished with 16.

SOU continues a four-game homestand Thursday against league-leader Eastern Oregon, which is ranked No. 16 in the country.
