North Marion ships Knights to consolation bracket

CORVALLIS - North Valley came up short in its first girls basketball state tournament game in 15 years.

The Knights could not make up an eight-point deficit entering the final quarter and suffered a 52-46 loss to North Marion in the opening-round of the OSAA/U.S. Bank Class 3A girls tournament Tuesday at Gill Coliseum.

The Skyline Conference champion Knights (19-4) drop into the consolation bracket and play Tillamook, a 61-50 loser to Ontario, at 2 p.m. today at Corvallis High School.

North Valley super sophomore Elaina Renius came through with an excellent performance.in her state tournament debut The 6-foot-3 Renius scored a game-high 18 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field.

Additionally, Renius led all players with 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.

North Marion (23-3), which defeated Ranier in a state playoff game Saturday to secure a state tournament berth, scored six consecutive points in the second quarter to break a 12-all tie. North Valley trailed 28-24 at halftime.

North Marion (23-3) went on a 6-2 run over three minutes in the third quarter, extending their lead to 40-32.

The closest the Knights got after that was 44-40 with six minutes remaining in the game, but the Huskies answered with a 5-0 burst.

Sophomore forward Whitney Makepeace added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Knights.

North Valley outrebounded the Huskies, 38-27, but the Knights turned the ball over 16 times.

Kelsey Kahle scored 16 points to lead North Marion.

ONTARIO 61, TILLAMOOK 50 - Stephanie Hawk scored 24 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for Ontario.

Ontario led 14-13, but went on an 11-3 run early in the second period. The Cheesemakers narrowed the lead to 34-29 with 5:30 remaining in the first half.

The Tigers led 44-32 after three quarters and by as many as 16 in the fourth.

SCAPPOOSE 56, SUTHERLIN 41 - Lisa Sorenson scored 12 of her 19 points in the third quarter to help Scappoose pulled away.

Emily Poster and Jehnna Baldwin each added 10 for the Indians.

Sorenson scored 10 straight points during a Scappoose 12-0 third-quarter burst. She connected on two 3-pointers and added a three-point play.

Scappoose, which led 44-36 at the end of the three quarters, scored the first 12 points of the fourth quarter as Sutherlin went cold from the floor.

Ashley Lee scored 18 points to lead the way for the Bulldogs. She hit three 3-pointers.

WILSONVILLE 56, NEWPORT 40 - Defending champion Wilsonville used a 15-2 run over the third and fourth quarters put away Newport.

Jill Noe scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Wildcats, who turned a 33-30 lead into a 48-32 advantage in the span of five minutes in the second half.

Newport struggled from the floor in the first half, converting on just 8-of-26 shots. Shana Ashard kept Newport in the game in the first half with nine of her teams 19 points. Ashard finished with 11 while Kristen Buckmaster led the Cubs with 12.

Boys

CENTRAL 44, VALLEY CATHOLIC 36 - Jordan Pratt scored 14 points to lead Capitol League champion Central to the opening-round win.

Joe VanDonelen tallied a game-high 17 for the Valley Catholic.

Valley Catholic led 14-8 toward the end of the first quarter, which was interrupted for 15 minutes when someone activated a fire alarm.

The Valiants extended their lead to 20-12 with 5:19 left in the first half. But the Panthers narrowed it to 20-18 by halftime.

The Panthers took a 25-24 lead on a third-quarter layup by Andrew Stockner, the start of a 6-0 run.

TILLAMOOK 71, REEDSPORT 63 - Jason Hartford scored 37 points as Tillamook held off Reedsport.

Tillamook led by as many as 22 points, 33-11, but the Cheesemakers' were outscored 53-38 for the remainder of the game.

Hartford had 17 points at halftime and scored 10 of the Cheesemakers' 13 in the third quarter. He shot 16 of 25 from the field.

Nick Borrevik led the Braves (18-6) with 23 points.
