SOU's Dunn, Merritt shine at track meet

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Southern Oregon's Nick Dunn and Tiwana Merritt each posted NAIA national qualifying times in winning events Saturday at the Bruce Drummond Invitational track and field meet at Sacramento State University.

Overall team scores weren't tabulated, but dual-meet results were kept.

Dunn, a North Medford High product, helped the Raider men to a 3-2 record, while Merritt spurred the women to a 4-2 mark in the meet that also included Nevada, UC Riverside, Humboldt State, Fresno State and Shasta College.

Dunn covered the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 53.82 seconds.

Merritt won the 400 in 57.34. She also was third in the 200 (25.63).

"It was just a great effort on the part of most of the kids," said SOU coach Mike Jones. "We're where we want to be at this point in the season, as evidenced by the national qualifying marks in this meet and in other meets. It was a good meet for us."

Liana Bernard was third in the 5,000 in 18:27.59, Kena Page was fourth in the long jump at 17-11/4 and Megan Heuberger was fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:06.05.
