Ashland picks up where it left off in baseball rout

ASHLAND - In its first game of the season, the Ashland baseball team demonstrated why it is ranked No. — in the state in the preseason Associated Press poll.

The Grizzlies, the defending Southern Oregon Conference champions, needed only five innings - and four times at-bat - to dispose of Yreka (Calif.), 12-0, in Ashland on Tuesday.

Five Grizzly pitchers combined to no-hit Yreka and fire 10 strikeouts.

Senior Mike Allen started and struck out five in two innings to earn the victory.

Senior second baseman Tim Hegdahl was 2-for-2, including a bases-loaded triple in the fourth inning. He had four RBIs overall.

Allen was 2-for-3, as was senior first baseman Bill Rowe.

Ashland next travels to Etna, Calif., for two games Friday and another Saturday.

SOUTH MEDFORD 13, HIDDEN VALLEY 8 - At Miles Field, Ryan Norris had four hits in six at-bats to lead the South Medford baseball team to a season-opening win.

Norris had two doubles and two RBIs, while teammate Andy Narris added two hits and a team-high three RBIs.

The Panthers crossed home 11 times in the first three innings to extend to a comfortable 11-3 lead.

Trevor Schmidt led the Mustangs with two hits.

Softball

ASHLAND 7, YREKA 0 - At Yreka, Calif., Megan Beugli tossed a two-hit shutout and sparked the Ashland offense with two hits and two RBIs.

The Grizzly junior pitcher struck out nine and didn't issue a walk in the season opener. Beugli smacked a two-run homer in the third inning.

Ashland senior Cat Clason collected two hits and scored twice, while junior S.J. Burnson went 2-for-2.

Girls Golf

ALL SOC - Ashland freshman Stephanie Johns captured medalist honors and Roseburg buried the field in the team competition at the opening Southern Oregon Conference girls tournament Monday at Stewart Meadows.

Johns came back from a 43 on the front nine with a 2-over par 37 after the turn for a low score of 83. Roseburg's Jennifer Gaston and Melissa Carl tied for second with North Medford's Kacie Kinney at 86 on the par-70 layout.

Roseburg placed three golfers in the top five to post a low team score of 363. Grants Pass was second at 429.

Girls Tennis

NORTH MEDFORD JAMBOREE - The defending state champion North Medford girls tennis team won its second preseason match in as many days to open the season.

The Black Tornado took 26 of the 28 matches played against Grants Pass.

Annie Chaney, playing in the No. — slot for North, downed Megan Moon 6-3 then teammate Erin Chamberlain followed with a 6-0 decision over Grants Pass' Kelly Hamlyn.

April Louie, McKenzie Hilmer, Melissa Witton, Beth Alston, Kelsey Thornton, Valerie Iverson, Christine Spencer, Sonia Aguilera, Meaghan Mayeda, Kendra Ira, Heather Dumas, Jennifer Pendergast, Lauren Schwartz and Rachel Ryan all combined for victories in the singles and doubles events.

Katie Tardue was the only Caver with a singles victory, while Erin Mintun and Ashley Hurst combined for Grants Pass' lone doubles win.

Track & Field

ST. MARY'S RELAYS - St. Mary's boys had five first-place finishes, while the girls took two of the top individual spots.

The meet ended prematurley due to darkness.

The Crusaders' Brian Kirkpatrick won the 100-meter hurdles event with a time of 19.2, while teammates Ruben Cotti and John Wing took the top spots in javelin and shot put with marks of 154-11 and 41-4, respectively.

St. Mary's also won the 800 (1:37.0) and 400 relays (46.5), while the girls also captured the same two events with a 56.1 in the 400 and 1:54.9 in the 800.

Cascade Christian's Zach Mellow won the high jump with a mark of 5-8, while Jessica Tresser too the girls' long jump with a distance of 14-6.

The Phoenix boys' distance medley squad raced to a first-place finish with a time of 11:23.2 and also captured the 3,200 relay in 8:48.7.

The Pirates' girls distance team also captured the relay event with a winning time of 14:02.9.
