SOU completes California roadtrip with victory over Bethany College

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif - A combinationof strong hitting and pitching will go a long way toward wining softball games,as Southern Oregon University's team is discovering.

Brandi Brown pitched two more solid games and the Raider bats complemented her with 15 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Bethany College Thursday, 5-3 and 3-0.

SOU completed a California road trip with seven straight wins and a 7-1 record. The Raiders are 8-2 overall.

"We're very excited," said coach James Gravelle. "We're hitting the ball very well and making contact with the ball better than I've seen us in two years. We're not finding the gaps a lot of times, but our contact is tremendous right now."

That, coupled with Brown's prowess, has proven a deadly combination for opponents.

Brown pitched a four-hitter in the nightcap, striking out five and not walking a batter. She hit one.

In the opener, two of the three runs she allowed were earned. She gave up five hits, fanned five and walked two.

"Brandi's main thing is that when she's hitting her spots, she's very hard to hit," said Gravelle. "Of the 10 games she's pitched, in nine of those she was hitting her spots."

SOU scored three runs in the third inning in each game to seal the respective victories.

In the opener, the Raiders led 1-0 entering the third.

Brown led off with a single and scored on Lisa Aitchison's triple. Latisha Inget then reached on an error that scored Aitchison. Inget stole second, then scored on Seanna Doyel's sacrifice bunt that was followed by two errors.

In Game 2, Alyssa Ellis walked in the third, then moved to third on Haley Varley's single. Inget singled in Ellis, and Aitchison followed with a fly to right field that was misplayed, resulting in the final two runs.

The Raiders next visit Northwest Christian in Eugene for a doubleheader Wednesday, then host the inaugural Cascade Conference preseason tournament April 6-7.
