Kelley leads Cascade Christian past Days Creek

JACKSONVILLE - Laural Kelley earned first-team, all-conference honors in the Southern Cascade League last season, but the senior pitcher has ratcheted up her game considerably this spring.

Kelley won both ends of a doubleheader against Days Creek on Friday as she limited the Wolves to five hits in 12 innings of work. She also had 27 strikeouts and just two walks in a dominating performance.

"She's a little bigger and stronger than last year but the big thing is her control - she's spotting her pitches so much better and not walking hardly anyone," Cascade Christian coach Wally Nye said. "She's very consistent."

Kelley was also a major contributor at the plate, going 5-for-7 with four RBIs in the two games.

With the score tied 4-4 in the first game, Cascade Christian's Vickie Sherman singled home Jennifer Burke with what proved to be the game-winning hit in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sherman led off the inning with a double.

The Challengers added an insurance run in the sixth when Rusti Mosser, Machenzie Ennis and Chelsea Winner hit successive singles.

In Game 2, Cascade Christian erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning to take a 10-0 lead and the game ended after the fifth due to the 10-run mercy rule. Natalie Dicus' three-run double fueled the big inning.

Nicole Plummer went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored in the second game. Kelley also went 3-for-3 in the nightcap.
