Crater rallies past KU to complete sweep

CENTRAL POINT - Chuck Dominiak has seen most everything in his 20 years with the Crater High baseball program.

But in a Southern Oregon Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, Dominiak witnessed a rally the likes of which he'd never seen before.

Dominiak's Comets hammered seven seventh-inning hits - including six straight to start the inning - to rally from a six-run deficit and topple Klamath Union, 18-17, in Game 2.

Crater (12-2 overall, 4-0 SOC) cruised to a 9-0 victory in Game — behind senior pitcher Derek Petersen (5-1), who struck out five, walked none and allowed five hits in six innings of work.

Down to its final three outs and trailing 17-11 in the second game, Crater started the seventh with hits from David Sills, Frank Drake, Jared Maddocks, Petersen, Trevor Ryan and Sean Teaters to cut the margin to 17-14.

Following the inning's first out, sophomore outfielder Dan Whitehead, who went 4-for-7 with six RBIs on the day, smacked a two-run single to make it 17-16.

A hit batsman later, Sills drew a bases-loaded walk to knot it at 17-all.

Then Drake lofted a foul pop-up along the first-base line, and as the Pelican first baseman made the catch while colliding with the second baseman, Whitehead tagged up at third base and sped home with the winning run.

The two teams combined for 30 hits and 19 errors in Game 2, with the Comets collecting 18 of the hits and making 10 of the miscues.

"It was just a sloppy played game," Dominiak said. "A lot different than Game 1. But that's baseball. You never know what's going to happen next."

The Panthers (5-7-1 overall, 1-3 SOC) gave up five runs in the top of the fifth in Game 2, losing what had been a 4-3 edge, for their third SOC defeat when leading in the fifth inning or later.

The Cavemen (7-5, 1-3) were outhit in both games, but they took advantage of six walks, two hit batsmen and three South errors to take Game 2.

Panthers junior Jeremy Frantz went 4-for-8 with four RBIs in the twin bill, including a solo home run, his first.

South senior Ryan Heil belted three hits in four at-bats in Game 2, doubling twice.
