Judkins' double helps spark Hornets to victory at North Valley
MERLIN - What started out as a tightly contested battle between two of the Skyline Conference's heavyweights in baseball turned into a rout with one swing of the bat.
Fifth-ranked Henley's Matt Judkins broke up a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning with a two-run double and the Hornets went on to a 7-2 victory over North Valley on Monday.
The Hornets maintain the top spot in the Skyline Conference with a 10-1 mark, while North Valley fell to 7-3 in league play.
Henley put runners on second and third with no outs in the sixth and Judkins followed with a double down the third base line past a drawn-in infield.
"We had our chances early," said North Valley coach Mike Reese. "We just couldn't bunch anything together.
"It was a well-played high school game until the sixth. That hit kind of took the steam out of us."
Geoff Phelps and Luke Paul each had two hits for the Knights, while Paul Mitchell smacked a solo home run in the first inning.
Judkins finished with three hits, three RBIs and two runs. Teammate Kirk Cunningham added two hits.
Henley put two more runs across in the seventh, with one coming on a solo blast by Morgan Grohs.
North Valley pitcher Drew Dechenne limited the Hornets to just the two runs until the sixth.
"I thought he battled a team that's got a lot of experience," said Reese of his sophomore hurler. "They're a really good ballclub. That's probably the best defensive club we've played this year."
The Knights (9-6 overall) play host to Lakeview today at 4:30 p.m., while Henley travels to play Hidden Valley.
