Ross leads Phoenix past Hidden Valley in Skyline sweep

TALENT - Tiffany Ross was a smashing success on Saturday.

The junior pitcher notched a pair of victories on the mound and shattered the windshield of her own car with a line-drive home run in leading the Phoenix High softball team to a Skyline Conference doubleheader sweep of Hidden Valley at Hagler-James Park.

"Just before she went to the plate, her dad said, 'Just aim for that white Honda out there,' and lo and behold she nailed it," Phoenix coach Bill Shearin said. "It was a rocket. It just shattered her windshield."

The two victories moved the Pirates to 12-2 in the Skyline Conference and 13-6 overall.

Ross fired a one-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks in the opening game, which was stopped after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Jamie Escobar got Phoenix off to a quick lead with a two-run double in the first inning, and the Pirates exploded for seven runs in the second to turn the game into a rout. Shannon Reed had a pair of hits in the inning, while Christina Saldivar and Kelsey Russell each slugged doubles.

Hidden Valley roughed up Phoenix freshman pitcher Nicole Engle for two doubles, a triple and two runs in the first inning of Game 2, but Ross came on in the second and held the Mustangs to two hits and no runs the rest of the way.

April Darby's two-run single tied the game in the bottom of the second, and the Pirates took the lead for good when Reed stroked a sacrifice fly.

Darby went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in Game 2, and Ross had a single to augment her home run.

"Ross had a great day, but we did a lot of good things as a team," Shearin said. "We had a bad habit of running ourselves off the base paths earlier this season, but we've been working on our base-running skills, and I saw a big improvement in that area today.

"We're playing a lot smarter."
