Knights inch closer in Skyline race

MURPHY - North Valley kept its Skyline Conference baseball playoff hopes alive Tuesday with a wild, 13-7 victory over Josephine County rival Hidden Valley.

The Knights led 6-0 after 11/2 innings, watched the Mustangs cut the gap to 8-7 after six innings, and then exploded for five runs in the seventh to pull away for the victory.

Luke Hall and Ariah Nead had doubles and Geoff Phelps added a single for North Valley in the seventh.

The win moved the Knights to 8-7 in conference play and moved them within 21/2 games of third-place Phoenix.

Hidden Valley dropped to 3-11 with the loss.

Hall, Nead, Josh Shippy and Tyler Hurst all had two hits for the Knights, while Peter Richard went 3-for-4 for Hidden Valley.

BUTTE FALLS 10, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3- At Butte Falls, sophomore pitcher Chris Copeland went the distance and limited Cascade Christian to three hits and struck out seven in the non-league game.

Barry Parker and Cale Freeman sparked the Loggers' five-run first inning with a pair of two-run triples.

David Hoel and Nick Rodgers each added two hits for Butte Falls (6-12, 2-4 District 6).

Softball

NORTH VALLEY 8, HIDDEN VALLEY 0- At Merlin, Tara Ironside pitched a five-hit shutout and received strong defensive support with two double plays.

The Knights (8-11, 7-8 Skyline) scored all the runs they would need with a four-run first inning. Michelle Beck opened the rally with a triple, and Shea Miller contributed a two-run single to account for the final runs of the frame.

Miller had three RBIs for the Knights, while Rita Long added two hits, scored twice and stole one base.
