Three Pirates selected to Skyline first team

Phoenix seniors Eric Kessler and Brett Goble and junior utility player Brady Rhodes were selected to the 2002 Skyline baseball all-conference first team.

Conference champion Henley received the top individual honors with senior shortstop Brian Kinsman chosen as player of the year and Hornet rookie skipper Joe Tachinni picked for coach of the year.

Kinsman, who has receive a full scholarship to San Diego State to play baseball, batted .500 with seven home runs and 36 RBIs.

He's a heck've player defensively and offensively, Phoenix coach Joe Hagler said. He's been a starter for them for a lot of years.

Kessler, a second-teamer last year, has been a significant contributor for the Pirates. He led the league in batting with a .507 average. The speedy outfielder batted in the No. — spot in the order and responded by leading the team in runs (27), hits (34) and tied for the lead in doubles (9). Kessler only struck out twice in 67 at bats.

For the last two years he's been a very important part of our team, Hagler said. He's extremely competitive. He hits lots of line drives and hard ground balls.

Goble, a 6-foot-4 righthander, emerged as the ace of the Pirates pitching staff. Goble posted a 9-3 conference record with a 1.60 ERA using a side-arm delivery.

He was able to hit his spots well and did an excellent job of keeping the ball down, said Hagler.

Rhodes was used as a pitcher, at first base and right field.

The hard-throwing left-hander had a 6-3 record, with three shutouts. He also batted .328 with 13 runs and 15 RBIs.

His biggest contribution was on the mound, said Hagler.

North Valley junior Ariah Nead was the only other local player to receive first-team status. The speedy shortstop batted .493 with 33 hits and 30 RBIs.

He (Nead) is athletic enough to make the great play in addition to the routine one, said Hagler.
