Word outduels Walker for oval win

WHITE CITY ' It was like old times for Jim Walker Jr. and Frank Word III at the Southern Oregon Speedway on Saturday night.

The defending points champion ' Walker ' and this year's leader ' Word ' staged a classic in the feature of the pro stocks. Walker benefited from a re-start on the first lap to take control by the midway point of the main event. Meanwhile, Word never made it out of the pits with his normal Superman 55 car, instead having to borrow from John Wayne Cahill.

After finishing fourth in his heat, Word made the Cahill ride sing, winning the 25-lap main by three car lengths. After Tracy Bradley flipped his car on the 22nd lap, Word moved past Walker following the re-start on the 24th lap and took the checkered flag.

36;1,500-to-win feature in the sprint cars went to local favorite Bill Nutter. One of the largest fields of the season was on hand in the sprints with Nutter holding off one challenge after another following a slew of yellow flags.

A 30-plus car field in the modifieds put on a good show.

When the dust cleared, and after several yellow flags slowed the action and cut the feature from 25 to 20 laps, Brian Poppa grabbed the checkered flag.

Markey James, who won last week's feature, was the early leader until Poppa, the track's pro stock champion in 1999, came up through the field and took charge on the 13th lap, never giving up the lead.

Also Saturday, Pat Akins took the checkered flag in the mini stock feature. The main event was slowed by several multi-car crashes, limiting the feature to just 13 laps.

Justin Holt won the 20-lap super truck feature, emerging from a tight pack midway through the main.

Next weekend the Speedway will host The Dwarf Car Nationals. Over 70 of the best dwarf car drivers from California and the Pacific Northwest will take part, including Jon DeBenedetti, a former dwarf car national champion.

DeBenedetti, who is leading the modified division at the Speedway this season, brought his dwarf car out of the garage last week and won the feature. He has reportedly picked up the necessary sponsorships to run the series this weekend, one of the four stops on the way to determining a national dwarf car champion.
