Blue Aces seventh in tournament

SPOKANE, Wash. ' The South Medford Blue Aces took seventh place out of 28 teams on Sunday in the American Softball Association girls 18-under National B Tournament at Franklin Park.

The Blue Aces lost two of three games on Sunday and finished 4-2 overall.

South Medford dropped its first contest, 2-1, to Creswell, despite holding a 1-0 lead into the fifth inning.

Erica Corns doubled for the Blue Aces in the fourth inning and Megan Beugli followed with another two-bagger to put South up 1-0.

South Medford bounced back with a 7-2 victory over La Mirada, Calif.

Beugli tossed a three-hitter, striking out eight.

Jackie Chaplin, Katie Kaufman and Bethany Stousland each had two hits as South tallied 13 for the game.

The Hoisington, Kan., Heat ended the Blue Aces' tournament stay with a 4-0 victory.

Chaplin led the way with two hits in three plate appearances.

Baseball

MID-VALLEY PEPSI 10-6, SOUTHERN OREGON RIVERDOGS 9-3 ' At Philomath, Andy Bartels had six hits in two games, but the Southern Oregon RiverDogs dropped a season-ending doubleheader to Mid-Valley Pepsi.

Eric Beasly came home with the tying run in the top half of the ninth inning of Game — on a bases-loaded walk, but Mid-Valley answered in the home half with a run to secure the win.

Southern Oregon held a 5-2 lead into the seventh before Mid-Valley scored six times to forge ahead.

Steve DeClerck had three hits for Southern Oregon (37-20), while Nate Mayben, Colby Gonzales and Beasly each added two hits.

John Zumwalt had two hits in Game 2.

Tennis

CLI TOURNAMENT ' Grants Pass' Steve Nelson outlasted Medford's Gary Woodring, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, to win the men's 4.0 singles event in the CLI Tournament at the Southern Oregon Tennis Club.

Ruth Lopez, of Grants Pass, topped Medford's Mari Ann Chaney, 6-3, 6-0, to win the women's 3.5/4.0 singles title.
